Name: Derek Hale Door: DOOR PASS - Dominant Canon: Teen Wolf Canon Point: 3x07: Currents Age: 22 Appearance: link one | link two | link three History: derek on the teen wolf wiki Personality: Derek Hale has been ruined by guilt. Once upon a time, Derek Hale was a sweet kid. He was born a werewolf into a family who taught him how to hone his gifts and respect the animal inside of him rather than fear it, and in the glimpses we see of his early life, he proves himself to be a romantic, gentle soul. Funny and clever, sarcastic and sweet. At fifteen, Derek loved his family, he loved basketball, he loved his girlfriend and he loved his friends. And then things went wrong. When he first fell in love, he mercy killed the girl who stole his heart after a choice he made led her to a slow and agonizing death. A year later, when he was sixteen, the majority of his family burned to death in the home he grew up in due to a second, separate choice that he made. His older sister, his uncle, his second girlfriend, his third - everyone he's ever loved or trusted has either died because of him or stabbed him in the back, and no matter how good a person he might be, he's convinced with an unwavering certainty that everything he's ever been through is all his fault. Derek lives in the past, weighed down by his mistakes. He never should have listened to his uncle, who convinced him that he and Paige could only be together if she was given the bite and turned into a wolf; if he hadn't set that up, he never would have had to break her neck while she cried in his arms, pleading for death. He never should have believed that Kate Argent loved him - he should have realized that she was a werewolf hunter, that every manipulative, meticulous step she made in their relationship was all so that she could pry enough information from him to burn his home to the ground. He's in an eternal cycle of grief and self-hatred, trapped by the paralyzing fear that he'll fuck up again, that he'll get hurt, or that people will get hurt because of him. He's made innumerable mistakes in his life, all because of a naive quickness to trust and a far too romantic heart, so - as an adult who has seen and been through so, so much, Derek has shut himself down, closed himself off. He's chosen to carry the weight of the world on his own two shoulders and stay as independent as he can so as not to hurt himself or the people around him. Not anymore, not again. His primary driving forces are his guilt and his trust issues, which lead the majority of what he does and how he handles himself, but under all the tough skin and violent bravado, he's a good person who wants to help. He wants to be a problem solver. He wants to be better. He's a naturally aggressive person, quick to anger and ready to threaten someone with violence the second they get on his bad side, and between all the self-doubt, constant fear and unwillingness to chill out for a second, he's not the easiest guy in the world to get along with. He's sarcastic and quick-witted, but these are powers that he uses prettttty much exclusively to be mean. Despite this, and despite everything he's been through, he cares far, far too much about other people - while his defensiveness makes him cold and cruel, he's established early on in the series as a mentor to the main character. When the protagonist of Teen Wolf, Scott McCall, is bitten by a werewolf and has to adjust to all the changes in his life that come with that, Derek is the only capable person in a position to teach him how to handle the transformation. And he does. Scott gets him arrested, Scott never trusts him, Scott rarely accepts his help, Scott falsely accuses him of murder, but through it all, Derek's there regardless, doing what he can to keep Scott out of trouble and show him how to be a werewolf. He does everything he can to keep Scott above water, to save him from a threat he doesn't realize he's up against and to keep him out of trouble, all while doing it from as much of a distance as he can. He doesn't know how to rely on people, doesn't remember how, so he doesn't ask Scott for help when he needs it, doesn't tell him about how bad things can get for the both of them; he keeps Scott in the dark, all so he doesn't have to be as afraid as Derek is. This, too, is indicative of who Derek is as a person. He's socially stunted and difficult to understand, and at twenty-two years of age he's trying to relearn how to deal with people after a life of being gaslit and manipulated and emotionally abused. He's an unrepentant, overly defensive asshole, covered in layers of fear and bitterness and anger, but I can't stress this enough: he cares. He's stubborn and persistent, traits that are always incredibly visible when he has a goal to work towards, and he tries to help people whenever he can, tries to do the right thing no matter how much he fears he might fuck it up. He lives hard and fast with his safety, risking his life for other people at the drop of a hat. He's a guardian, a protector. He's a shield, but by the end of season 1, after killing the only other known survivor of the Hale fire, he finally ends up alone. In Teen Wolf, every werewolf needs an "anchor", something to keep him or her grounded to reality so they don't lose themselves to the beast inside of them and run rampant during the full moon, needlessly killing humans and each other alike. Derek's anger is his. The loss of his family, all the betrayal he's been through, the hunters who have tried to slaughter his kind since before he was born. After becoming an Alpha Werewolf, Derek focused on the rage he felt towards himself, towards the injustices he'd been through, towards life, and towards his now-constant loneliness. That white hot, ever-burning anger, that's what keeps him from falling to his base animal instincts. His anger and his loneliness was what guided him when, after killing his uncle, he became an Alpha. An Alpha werewolf is at the highest peak of werewolf hierarchy and the only kind of werewolf capable of biting and transferring lycanthropy to humans. As an Alpha, Derek turned a handful of lonely, broken kids into werewolves, making them his Betas, or packmates. Three teenagers, one abused, one sick, one lonely - he promised them all a better life. His anger made him desperate to survive, and he wanted to surround himself with numbers to protect himself, because protection and strength and confidence were the only things he believed could keep him alive. Derek, again, is single-minded, and so many major choices he makes are based on fear, guilt, and a need to feel safe. As an Alpha, Derek is chaotic, incompetent and violent. He pushes his Betas well past their limits, trying to instil a fear of the world into them, trying to teach them to value their survival above all else. He pushes and he pushes and he pushes, constantly lashing out, constantly trying to take care of the threats swarming Beacon Hills, infesting it. Derek pushes, and he pushes, and he fails. See, Derek tries too hard. Even before the fire, even before Paige's death, he tried too hard. He quotes Shakespeare to impress girls, he shows off his basketball talents to flirt, he keeps teenage werewolves blind to the dangers their in out of an arrogant and frankly pathetic belief that he'll be able to save them before they realize what could happen to them. As an Alpha, he's rough, he's borderline abusive, and he's demanding, because he's scared of what would happen if he's not; his betas are his responsibility, and if he takes it too easy on them, they'll turn weak, they'll die, or he won't be a strong enough Alpha for them, and he won't be able to protect them. His incompetence and his pushiness gets more people killed. He makes more people leave him. Even at the height of his power, even at his most secure, Derek struggles to meet his own expectations. He forces himself to be bigger and tougher than he is, and it's like putting a bowling ball on top of a house of cards. He doesn't have the fortitude to be as powerful and as good as he wants to be. At the core of him, that's who Derek is; someone who wants more from himself than he can possibly get, someone who makes mistakes out of the fear of making mistakes, and someone who disappoints himself every single day. Someone immature who tries far, far too hard. Derek Hale needs to learn how to grow, and he will, but he needs time to get it right. To summarize, here's a brief overview of the four major traits I've picked for Derek: Negative Powers and Abilities: Lycanthropy - Rather than being bitten and becoming one, Derek was born a werewolf. Derek undergoes a number of physical changes to his appearance when he embraces his doggy side, something he can do at will - his eyes turn red, his teeth get spooky, he grows claws, and he's granted a large increase in his physical strength and stamina, able to run faster and jump higher and punch harder than most humans. He doesn't gain enough strength to classify it as super strength, but he can lift more and attack harder than he could otherwise. He can also transform into a more completed werewolf form, with broken bone structure and an increase in facial and body hair. This transformation causes him to become more animalistic in nature - bloodthirsty and angry, far more predatory and dangerous. While he's capable of resisting the light of it, the full moon typically triggers full transformations in werewolves unequipped with the will or the discipline to anchor themselves (as referenced to in his personality section), and should Derek ever go through this, he'll become violent; an untamed animal, a danger to himself and the people he cares for. All of Derek's senses are enhanced. He can hear pitches and frequencies outside the range of normal human levels, as well as hear sounds typically too minute for humans to pick up on. He can hear a person's heartbeat from a few feet away, if he hones in on it, as well as differentiate between layers of sound to focus on something with great precision - for example, in a crowd of talkative people, he's able to focus on one particular conversation while setting everything else aside as white noise. He's capable of tracking scents as if he were a bloodhound; his nose is heightened to such a degree that he can identify a person by their smell, track and hunt anything that leaves a fresh trail and get vague senses of a person's emotional state. His sense of vision is just as advanced as his senses of hearing and smell - he's capable of seeing in the dark and across great distances with perfect clarity, as well as pick up on any subtle changes in a person's body language. Werewolves are also in possession of regenerative powers, capable of recovering from injuries at a much higher rate than humans (a skill which can be manually accelerated through self-harm), while also being capable of sustaining heavier damage before their wounds affect them. While sturdier than most, this doesn't make Derek immortal or even particularly strong in any way; surface wounds like scratches and bruises heal at twice the normal rate than they would for humans, but broken bones and injuries of similar severity are still going to put him out for a decent amount of time before his body gets its shit in gear. Wounds fatal to humans can still kill him. While typically incapable of actually healing wounds in any way (with the one exception of being through the sacrifice of his Alpha status), Derek can take another person's physical pain into his body, which essentially has the effect of sedating them. Through touch, Derek draws a person's pain and absorbs it through his veins. Also, in canon, drugs and alcohol don't affect him because his cells regenerate too quickly, but if it ever comes up, this (obviously) won't apply to anything setting-specific for Duplicity. Werewolves are in possession of the power to view and manipulate memories, though Derek runs the risk of paralyzing or even killing whoever he uses this ability on. Through puncturing the base of a person's spine with his claws, Derek can search through a person's memories, experience an event through their point of view, alter or even remove a specific memory or transfer one of his own memories into a person's head. This is an incredibly difficult, dangerous and limited ability that he'd only use in the most dire of circumstances. Through biting them in werewolf form, Derek can transform people into werewolves. Those who Derek bites will become Beta Wolves, whose eyes glow gold (or blue, if they've committed murder before). Any Beta Wolf turned by Derek will gain an unshakable connection to him for as long as they're a part of his pack (something they can choose to leave at any time); a familial-like bond that makes them feel like they're a part of something, as well as a general sense of completion to who they are. Their powers will be a little stronger and easier to use when they're close to him, as well as a sense of clarity to their thoughts and a boost of physical stamina. Inventory: Car keys. For a car that he doesn't have here. That's it. Samples: TDM + network below [ The last time Derek was in Duplicity, he did everything he could to skirt the rules - but only ever to a certain degree. He provided limited freedom to his subs without completely taking them off of their leashes, he lived as close to the outskirts of the city as he could to pretend like he wasn't a part of it without actually finding a way to leave... he went out of his way to avoid the chaos of the LIES program every chance he got, but he never directly fought back, never did much more than stay quiet and watch warily and do what he could to protect his own. He'd lived in fear since the executions at Fort Harmony, so he never pushed too far, never did anything to earn a spotlight. He barely even earned a citation, though christ, he was reckless enough on occasion that it came really, really close. This time, though - this time, Derek's coming back with experience, he's coming back without a pack, and he's coming back without an anchor. He's coming back to the city angry over the time he's lost, angry over the people he's lost, and even though he was starting to get better, starting to lean into the city's rules a little more to keep himself safe - right now, he's blindly forgetting the lessons he's already learned. He doesn't want to keep his head down or just toe the line right now, and maybe that's a feeling he'll regret in a couple of weeks - right now, he just wants to build a pack again, and if they have to step up and fight the city together, then they're gonna step up and fight the city together. But he needs a contract, first. Can't do much fighting if he's locked up in prison. He learned that the hard way back home. ] I need a sub. There are things I can give you. Things that this city can't. Strength. Confidence. Safety, security, power, health. Longevity. If you sign with me, I can give you a gift. The ability to run faster than you thought possible, heal wounds that shouldn't be able to be healed. The ability to fight. LIES forces you to live in filth and subservience. You won't have to do that wen you're with me. I can give you anything. Everything. I can help you break through every single one of your limitations. You have the power to decide that you don't want to follow Duplicity's rules anymore. Follow mine, instead. |
